Nattokinase NSK-SD®

Nattokinase NSK-SD® from Greatlife is nattokinase of the highest quality. It contains NSK-SD®, the most studied and patented form of nattokinase, produced by fermenting non-GMO soybeans with a specific Bacillus subtilis natto strain. Nattokinase is a powerful fibrinolytic enzyme that helps break down fibrin, a protein that in excess can negatively affect blood circulation. The product is pure, free from additives, toxins, and GMOs.

Nattokinase is a powerful proteolytic enzyme that primarily breaks down fibrin, a protein that plays a central role in blood coagulation. The exact substances nattokinase breaks down include:

  • Fibrin – A thread-like protein formed during blood coagulation that can contribute to blood clot formation.
  • Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) – A protein that inhibits the body's natural fibrinolytic processes. By reducing PAI-1, nattokinase can promote fibrin breakdown and support normal blood flow dynamics.
  • Thrombin – An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin during blood coagulation. Nattokinase may help modulate thrombin activity and thus influence the coagulation process.

Important to note:

  • Nattokinase does not break down collagen, elastin, or other structural proteins, making it specific to fibrinolytic processes.
  • The effect of nattokinase resembles the body’s natural enzyme plasmin, which is responsible for breaking down excess fibrin.

Nattokinase NSK-SD®

NSK-SD® is the highest quality nattokinase available. It is extracted from fermented soybeans and a patented strain of Bacillus subtilis natto and is completely pure, without additives or preservatives. Nattokinase NSK-SD® from Greatlife is entirely plant-based, non-irradiated, and contains no vitamin K2. Although nattokinase is the name of a single enzyme, many copies on the market claim to be nattokinase. For example, a peptidase produced by Bacillus subtilis in Japan, a protease produced by Bacillus subtilis in Taiwan and China, and a composite protease enzyme from Aspergillus oryzae in the USA are all sold as nattokinase. All these claim to be "nattokinase," but are actually other enzymes. These enzymes can partially dissolve artificial fibrin in a petri dish, but this does not mean the same reaction occurs in the human body. Furthermore, the safety of consuming these enzymes is questionable. NSK-SD® from Japan Bio Science Laboratory (JBSL) is the only nattokinase that has published data regarding safety and efficacy. It is important to ensure that you purchase genuine nattokinase and not an imitation that uses published data about NSK-SD® from JBSL. They have developed an identification method for nattokinase that can distinguish genuine nattokinase from other enzymes. Using this method, they identify differences between true nattokinase and pseudo-nattokinase. With two Japanese and three American patents, it has been recognized by both JHFA (Japan Health and Nutrition Food Authorization) and JNKA (Japan Nattokinase Association) as genuine nattokinase.

What is nattokinase and where does it come from?

Nattokinase is a natural enzyme extracted from the Japanese fermented soy product natto, which has been consumed in Japan for over 1000 years. The enzyme is produced by the bacterium Bacillus subtilis natto during the fermentation process and has been shown to have powerful fibrinolytic properties, meaning it helps the body break down fibrin, a protein involved in blood coagulation.

How does nattokinase work in the body?

Nattokinase supports the body's natural blood flow by helping to break down and dissolve excess fibrin that can contribute to thickened blood. It also affects the body's balance between coagulation and fibrinolysis, making it easier for blood to circulate freely. By promoting healthy circulation, nattokinase can help reduce the strain on the heart and blood vessels, improve tissue oxygenation, and support a strong cardiovascular system.

Why is nattokinase taken on an empty stomach or before bedtime?

When nattokinase is taken on an empty stomach, meaning at least 2 hours after a meal or 1 hour before the next meal, it does not break down food proteins but instead acts systemically in the blood. In this way, the enzyme can help maintain healthy blood viscosity, promote normal circulation, and support the body's own fibrinolytic activity. Since the body naturally tends to have higher coagulation activity at night, it is optimal to take nattokinase in the evening, about 60 minutes before bedtime.

What does FU mean in nattokinase and why is it important?

FU stands for Fibrinolytic Units and indicates the strength or activity of the enzyme, not its weight. A higher number of FU means stronger enzyme activity. A capsule with 2000 FU, as in Greatlife Nattokinase NSK-SD®, corresponds to a clinically effective dose with high biological activity and stability.

What is NSK-SD® and why is it considered the best nattokinase form?

NSK-SD® is the only clinically documented nattokinase form that is non-GMO and free from vitamin K2. It is produced in Japan under strictly controlled conditions from Bacillus subtilis natto through a patented fermentation and purification process. This makes NSK-SD® a safe and standardized form of nattokinase with guaranteed enzymatic activity and without unwanted by-products. Since it is free from K2, it does not directly affect blood coagulation, which is an important safety aspect for individuals who need to avoid vitamin K for medical reasons.

Who can benefit from nattokinase?

Nattokinase may be particularly valuable for individuals looking to support heart and vascular health, circulation, blood pressure, and oxygenation, as well as for those with a sedentary lifestyle, traveling long distances, or wanting to promote recovery in vascular tissue. It can also be a natural support for older individuals who wish to maintain good vascular function.

Can nattokinase be taken together with other supplements?

Yes, nattokinase is often combined with omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, or antioxidants such as quercetin and selenium to provide broader support for the cardiovascular system. The combination may help reduce oxidative stress in the blood vessels and support an elastic and healthy vascular system.

Is nattokinase safe to use every day?

Yes, nattokinase is natural and generally safe when taken at the recommended dosage. However, individuals taking blood-thinning medications, planning surgery, or with known bleeding disorders should consult a doctor before use, as nattokinase may enhance the body's fibrinolytic activity.

How does nattokinase differ from other enzyme supplements like bromelain and papain?

Although all three are proteolytic enzymes, nattokinase acts more specifically on fibrin in the blood, thereby supporting circulation and vascular health rather than digestion. Bromelain and papain are primarily used for digestive support and inflammation in tissues, while nattokinase mainly has fibrinolytic and cardiovascular effects.
