Iron and lead compete for the same protein

It is incredibly important to ensure adequate iron intake. A frequently overlooked reason for this is that iron and lead bind to the same transport protein in the small intestine. This protein facilitates the absorption of metals into the bloodstream. If iron intake is insufficient, the transport protein will bind to more lead and carry it through the blood to the brain and other tissues, where it can cause significant harm. Research has been conducted on children in Morocco living near mining areas, where they are exposed to high levels of lead while also having inadequate iron intake. The researchers found that children who were given biscuits fortified with iron reduced their blood lead levels.
